1. John Lennon formed a rock and roll group called The Quarrymen in Liverpool in 1956, which evolved into The Beatles in 1960. That's why John Lennon is considered to be the founding member of The Beatles. Before the name "The Beatles" was chosen, John and the other members had already had three other similar names: Beatals, Silver Beetles and Silver Beatles.

2. The original members of John Lennon's rock band were a group of school friends. But The Beatles as we know it consisted of Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and John Lennon. Ringo Star was -and still is!- an incredible drummer.

3. The Beatles were originally doing music of a genre called skiffle, which uses homemade or inexpensive instruments, including washboards, harmonicas, jugs, washtub basses, tin flutes... to play a variety of songs.

4. The Beatles recorded a total of 305 songs (probably including the unfinished or unreleased ones). The two main primary songwriters were John Lennon and Paul McCartney, but George Harrison also became a songwriter in his own right later on.

5. Elvis Presley was one of the earliest influences of The Beatles. John Lennon even said: "When I first heard Elvis' song Heartbreak Hotel, my whole life changed from then on". This song impacted hugely not only on John, but also on many young British male teenagers. The Beatles started wearing their hair slicked back like Elvis. They admired his rebellious look and his musical talent.

6. The Beatles starred in some films: A Hard Day's Night in 1964, Help in 1965 and Yellow Submarine in 1968. The band's final major film was Let It Be (1970), which documented the group rehearsing and recording songs for their final album.

7. The Beatles were advocates on many things such as feminism, environmentalism, anti-war or global peace movements, bohemianism, and racial integration. They were also faithful friends of animals.

8. The death of the manager of The Beatles, Brian Epstain, impacted them greatly. This was in fact the main cause of the group's dissolution. Brian not only resolved many of the members' conflicts, but he also played a major role in expanding the group?s popularity.

9. After the dissolution of The Beatles, Paul McCartney formed a band called Wings along with his wife Linda on keyboards. In 1977 the band earned their only UK number-one-single, which became the best-selling UK single in history back then.

10. Queen Elizabeth II appointed the Beatles as Members of the Order of the British Empire. This Order rewards people that have made significant contribution to the world!
